Poem: what’s it like to fit in?

What’s it like to fit in?

To feel accepted and approve of, neither fat nor thin.

To have just the right body the girls wanted,

And the ones the guys looked up to.

To be normal and cool,

To be effortless and rule

Conversations with ease.

No need to please,

The others around,

With jokes and banter, intelligence or wit,

In the hop that amongst them you’ll manage to fit.

What’s it like to feel part of the cool crew?

The ones that dress well, got their lives together,

Ambitions, aspirations with many goals to do.

They’ve had relationships and courtships,

Friendships and companionships,

Close bonds they feel with others,

Things they can share not just with their mothers.

What’s it like to just be you?

No mask, no pretence, no alternative you,

Just you, being real, being as true as can be,

Could that, just possibly, ever be me?

  1. What a wonderful poem Jas! This sums up the feeling that I’ve felt back in my Highschool days. I never really fitted in and didn’t really want to, but always struggled with the feeling that the grass was always greener in the normal side.

Now that I’m older, I realised that I am fine the way I am and that there’s no need to conform and do what everyone else is doing!! Being a trendsetter and having your own style is better than following the trends 😄

Reading this took me back to my Highschool days, it’s so well written!

(By the way, I have nominated you for a challenge and I hope to see your answers! If you do not wish to participate, that’s fine, but please give it a read if you’d like! Here: https://becomingproactive.wordpress.com/2018/04/08/quote-challenge-day-2/)

    1. Aw, thanks so much Claire! I went through a hard-time even into my twenties…I’m now 28 and only just starting to appreciate myself for who I am.

Thanks for the nomination – I’ll email the link to myself and read it when I can give it the attention it deserves!

      1. I’m happy for you Jas, as you have started on your journey to self appreciation and self love. The road is long but hang in there! In the end, you will love yourself all the more for it 😃

And you’re welcome! I’d love to see your answers soon, hopefully!

  2. Great poem. No need to please anyone but yourself, dude. No need to be cool, either. Cool is overrated. I was one of the popular kids in school and I loved it when someone didn’t try and ‘please’ me, I loved it when someone was just a good person. That’s all you’ve got to be, a good person. Good > cool, always.

    1. Aw, thanks Sophia. Yeah, being good and being just *you*. Taken me a while to start embracing this a little more & choosing the kinda people to hang around with. Thanks for your comment + advice!
